L.E.A.D. IT launches School IT on a Page app
UniFi’s Vape Detection & Air Quality Sensors is ideal in the spaces schools and businesses can’t watch – restrooms, changing rooms and unsupervised corners – turning them into monitored, alert-driven environments without the use of cameras.
The UniFi Vape Detection & Air Quality Sensor is a single, discreet device that connects to your network via standard PoE Ethernet network cable. It’s simple to adopt into your existing UniFi Protect setup and starts monitoring and streaming readings the moment it’s installed. There’s no separate app, no additional wiring and no camera, which makes it a good fit for sensitive spaces such as toilets and changing areas.
Every room has its own background mix of everyday vapours and sprays, from cleaning products and steam to deodorant sprays. That’s why L.E.A.D. IT Services calibrates each sensor’s detection threshold to the room it’s monitoring and protecting. We then review and fine-tune it against real alerts during the first few weeks, so you get genuine detections rather than false alarms.
We position vape sensor devices with one question in mind: where would a pupil, student or employee actually go to vape unseen? Placement is what determines whether a sensor catches a real event or just sits on a wall – so it’s the first thing we assess on every installation.
The single most common vaping location in any school or workplace – and the key location where camera surveillance cannot be applied.
Sports changing rooms and PE facilities, mounted away from steam and showers to protect detection accuracy.
Quiet stretches between lessons or shifts where a pupil or member of staff can step out of sight for a minute.
Spaces already used for behaviour management, where discreet monitoring supports the safeguarding process already in place.
In workplaces, the storerooms, plant rooms and loading areas that sit outside normal staff sightlines.
Sixth form and staff common rooms, minibuses and other enclosed spaces where a single sensor covers the whole volume.
Vaping doesn’t happen in the corridor, on camera, in full view of staff. It happens behind a locked cubicle door, in a changing room between lessons, in the one corner of the building nobody is standing in. Writing a policy is easy. Enforcing it in a space you’re not legally or practically allowed to put a camera in is a genuinely different problem.
That’s exactly what UniFi’s Vape Detection & Air Quality Sensor is built for – and what L.E.A.D. IT Services installs, calibrates and supports for schools, colleges and businesses across the UK.
Detects vape aerosol in real time, in spaces where cameras aren’t appropriate
Monitors CO2, air quality, humidity, temperature and particulate matter continuously
Sends instant alerts to the staff best placed to respond – before a habit becomes normalised
A sensor that quietly logs data after the fact doesn’t change behaviour. The value of this system is in the moment it fires: an alert lands with the staff member best placed to respond, while the pupil or employee is still in the room.

The Unifi Vape Detector identifies the specific aerosol signature produced by vapour and e-cigarette emissions in the surrounding air, giving a Vape Index reading in real time. It cannot identify who caused the reading — only that vaping has likely occurred, in a specific room, at a specific time – which is exactly why it’s suitable for restrooms and changing rooms where cameras aren’t appropriate.
Placement has the biggest impact on detection speed and accuracy. As part of our installation service, L.E.A.D. IT Services sites each sensor close to where vaping is most likely to occur – near cubicles rather than doorways, away from direct airflow, extractor fans and air fresheners – with one sensor per enclosed room, since walls and partitions block airflow to the device.
It can, which is why calibration matters. Every sensor has an adjustable sensitivity setting, and L.E.A.D. IT Services tunes this to each specific room during installation and reviews it against real-world alerts in the first weeks of use, minimising false positives from cleaning products, steam or air fresheners.
Alerts are configured to route to whichever staff you choose — a designated safeguarding lead, site team or duty manager — through UniFi Protect and Alarm Manager, so the right person is notified within seconds rather than discovering an issue after the fact.
Both. Alongside the Vape Index, it continuously measures CO2, temperature, humidity, and particulate matter (PM1–PM10), giving a full Air Quality Index reading. This means the same device that flags vaping can also flag poor ventilation in classrooms, offices and communal spaces.
Yes. While demand is highest from schools and colleges managing pupil vaping in restrooms and unsupervised spaces, L.E.A.D. IT Services installs the same Vape Detectors for businesses looking to monitor air quality in offices, back-of-house areas and staff facilities.
The sensor connects and is powered over a single PoE Ethernet cable and is adopted directly into UniFi Protect – no separate power supply or standalone app required. L.E.A.D. IT Services handles the full installation, from cabling and mounting through to adoption, calibration and integration with your existing network.
Yes. We’re based on Pride Park in Derby, but we install and support UniFi’s Vape Detection & Air Quality Sensors for schools, Multi Academy Trusts and businesses across the UK.
