Royal School for the Deaf Derby
Transforming a historic school with inclusive, modern technology
A long-term IT transformation at the Royal School for the Deaf Derby delivered reliable Wi-Fi, inclusive communication systems, and advanced security – creating a modern, accessible learning environment supported by dedicated on-site engineers and strategic planning.
The Challenge
The Royal School for the Deaf Derby is one of the oldest educational institutions in the city, with a proud heritage dating back to 1893. However, its ageing infrastructure meant limited access to reliable IT, inconsistent Wi-Fi, and outdated security systems.
Leaders recognised the need to modernise while preserving the school’s identity – ensuring technology could support both learning and accessibility, particularly for a community where communication needs are unique and essential.
The challenge was to deliver a fully connected, secure, and inclusive IT environment – planned carefully over time to remain affordable and sustainable.
The Solution
L.E.A.D. IT Services partnered with the school to design and deliver a phased transformation strategy.
This included:
A complete overhaul of the school’s Wi-Fi infrastructure, ensuring reliable access across the site
Installation of advanced security systems, including CCTV and a smart door access system
Implementation of a facial recognition-enabled entry system, integrated with a live video link to reception
A communication solution enabling visitors and staff to interact using British Sign Language (BSL) via on-screen video
Ongoing on-site technical support, with dedicated engineers embedded into school life
Working closely with leadership and governors, the project was carefully planned across five years to align with budget requirements while delivering long-term impact.
The Outcome
The transformation has enabled the Royal School for the Deaf Derby to embrace modern technology while enhancing accessibility and safeguarding.
Reliable, high-performance Wi-Fi now supports staff and students across the entire school
Inclusive communication technology ensures visitors can interact effectively using BSL
Enhanced safeguarding through intelligent access control and CCTV systems
Greater confidence in IT, with staff supported by responsive, on-site engineers
Technology now plays a central role in both learning and day-to-day operations
The result is a future-ready environment that respects the school’s heritage while meeting the needs of a modern, inclusive education setting.
What the School Said
Helen Shepherd, Headteacher, said:
We began working with L.E.A.D. IT Services around eight years ago and they have been a breath of fresh air.
Previously, we had very little IT… L.E.A.D. have ensured that everyone here has access to IT. It was a big project and they worked closely with us and our governors to plan this over five years to make sure that it was affordable.
They have vastly improved our Wi-Fi and installed state-of-the-art security systems… including a door access system with facial recognition and a direct link to reception, allowing communication in British Sign Language.
Our technicians are absolutely wonderful. They go above and beyond—nothing is too much trouble. They support live-streaming, work with staff and even engage with pupils. They really care, and that means a lot.
