Empowering Lifelong Learners Through 1:1 Technology

The Challenge

At Hogarth Academy, leaders and governors shared a clear ambition; to ensure every child had the tools, confidence and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

While teaching and learning were already strong, the school recognised that traditional approaches alone could not fully support:

  • The development of independent, confident learners
  • Improved engagement and motivation across all abilities
  • Equal access to learning tools, particularly for reading, writing and numeracy
  • Preparing pupils with the digital literacy skills they will need beyond primary education

The challenge was not simply to introduce devices, but to use technology thoughtfully, inclusively, and purposefully – ensuring it genuinely enhanced learning rather than distracting from it.

Hogarth Academy required a trusted partner who could supply, implement, and support a 1:1 device model that placed learning  – not technology  – at the centre.

The Solution

L.E.A.D. IT Services worked in close collaboration with Hogarth Academy to deliver a 1:1 device programme that was robust, accessible and designed specifically for classroom learning.

The solution focused on:

  • Supplying and deploying individual DELL devices for pupils, ensuring consistency and reliability
  • Supporting teaching staff to embed technology meaningfully into everyday lessons
  • Ensuring devices were equipped with tools that supported reading, writing, spelling and numeracy
  • Creating an environment where pupils could start learning immediately, independently and confidently

By removing barriers to access and placing a device directly in each child’s hands, teachers were able to transform lesson delivery and pupils were empowered to take ownership of their learning.

As Year 3 teacher, Alka O’Boyle observed:

They seem so much more motivated to get on and get started and get going. It has been such an amazing opportunity for them to have.

The Impact

The introduction of 1:1 devices has had a powerful and visible impact across Hogarth Academy.

Increased Engagement and Motivation

Pupils quickly embraced their devices, approaching lessons with excitement and confidence. Learning now begins instantly, with children eager to explore, practise and challenge themselves.

One pupil explained:

When I first got the device, I felt excited and I used them to listen to stories, to type, practise my handwriting and play math games.

Teachers report that pupils are more focused, more independent and more enthusiastic about their work – particularly during literacy and numeracy sessions.

Improved Independence and Accessibility

Technology has enabled pupils to overcome barriers that previously limited progress. Built‑in reading and writing tools allow children to self‑support, reducing frustration and building confidence.

As another pupil shared:

This reader is a tool that can help you with your reading. If we don’t know how to spell a word, then we click on it and then it will show us.

This instant access to support means learning continues without interruption, empowering pupils to solve problems independently while still receiving the guidance they need.

A shared vision from leadership

The success of the project is underpinned by a strong, shared vision across school leadership and governance. Technology is not viewed as an add‑on, but as a key enabler of outstanding learning.

Chair of Governors, Az Raoof reflected:

All of the governors and the supporting staff have brought into this idea of having support and technology and using it to the best advantage for the children.

For Headteacher Sarah Lee, the focus is firmly on outcomes for pupils:

Cause fundamentally, that’s the focus for me as headteacher. We want our children at Hogarth Academy to stand out as amazing learners.

Building Skills for the Future

Beyond immediate classroom impact, the 1:1 device programme is helping Hogarth Academy prepare pupils for life beyond primary education.

Technology is enabling children to develop:

  • Digital confidence
  • Independence and resilience
  • Problem‑solving skills
  • A curiosity for learning that extends beyond the classroom

Having the technology now will enable them to build that skillset and move forward to be lifelong learners.

As pupils grow and their learning deepens, the possibilities continue to expand:

Now as we grow and we learn, really the opportunities are limitless for us to access everything that’s out there and help the children.

The Value

Through partnership with L.E.A.D. IT Services, Hogarth Academy has achieved:

  • A successful 1:1 device rollout embedded into everyday teaching
  • Increased pupil motivation, engagement and independence
  • Improved accessibility for reading, writing and numeracy
  • A future‑focused learning environment aligned with the school’s vision

Most importantly, technology is now helping every child at Hogarth Academy to stand out as an amazing learner.
