Full iPad Safeguarding has finally arrived in UK schools
For years, iPads have been one of the most powerful tools in the classroom. They have also been one of the biggest blind spots in school safeguarding.
That changes now.
Ativion, the developer behind StudentKeeper – one of the world’s most advanced student safeguarding and monitoring platforms – has announced full iPad support, bringing comprehensive visibility, filtering and classroom management to Apple iOS devices for the first time. For UK schools and Multi Academy Trusts, this landmark development is now available through L.E.A.D. IT Services, Ativion’s Premier Strategic Partner.
The problem schools have been ignoring – but can’t afford to
Tablet adoption now exceeds 87% in UK primary schools, with millions of devices deployed across schools and Multi Academy Trusts – and iPads sit at the heart of that growth. Yet despite their widespread use, Apple’s iOS devices have long presented a significant and largely unresolved challenge for school safeguarding teams.
Apple’s strong emphasis on user privacy is a core feature of its ecosystem. However, these same privacy measures may restrict the ability of filtering and monitoring systems to operate effectively. Many safeguarding applications cannot monitor or restrict content within specific apps or encrypted traffic, and iOS ‘sandboxing’ limits app-level oversight – meaning inappropriate content may be accessed or shared without being flagged or recorded.
In plain terms; while schools have been investing heavily in iPads as learning tools, most safeguarding platforms have been unable to see what students are actually doing on them – particularly within apps. That is a safeguarding gap that KCSIE obligations demand schools address, and one that until now has had no truly effective solution.
The UK Safer Internet Centre has published specific guidance highlighting that schools using iOS devices must understand the technical limitations of their filtering and monitoring systems, assess whether their current set-up provides the same level of safeguarding visibility as on other platforms, and take deliberate steps to meet their safeguarding obligations.
StudentKeeper’s expanded iPad support directly answers that call.
A genuine USP – no other safeguarding platform does this
Full, deep-level iPad monitoring is not a standard feature of safeguarding platforms. Most solutions offer partial browser-level filtering at best, leaving in-app activity entirely unmonitored. StudentKeeper’s new capabilities represent a genuine and significant step forward – one that no comparable platform currently matches.
The enhanced StudentKeeper platform now enables schools to:
Gain full visibility into iPad activity, including in-app usage – not just browser-based browsing
Apply real-time classroom management controls across all devices, including iPads, in a single unified dashboard
Enforce consistent filtering and safeguarding policies on both managed and unmanaged devices, on-site and off-site
Monitor activity beyond the browser, closing the app-level safeguarding gap that has left millions of iPad users effectively unseen
Maintain KCSIE-aligned safeguarding oversight across every device in the classroom, regardless of operating system
Safeguarding must reflect how students actually use technology today,” said Jason Tomlinson, Group CEO of Ativion. “These new StudentKeeper capabilities will give schools insight into how students are accessing information – with no compromise on visibility or control. The iPad has become central to how children learn. It must also be central to how we protect them.
Available to UK Schools through L.E.A.D. IT Services
UK schools and Multi Academy Trusts can access StudentKeeper’s full iPad safeguarding capabilities through L.E.A.D. IT Services, Ativion’s Premier Strategic Partner for the UK education sector.
As a fully managed service, L.E.A.D. IT doesn’t simply deploy the platform and walk away. Every implementation is tailored to the school’s safeguarding policies, configured for their specific device environment, and supported by ongoing optimisation and expert guidance – ensuring that iPad monitoring is not just switched on, but genuinely effective.
For schools that want an additional layer of human oversight, L.E.A.D. IT’s dedicated Human Review service sits alongside StudentKeeper – with trained safeguarding professionals reviewing and triaging alerts, so Designated Safeguarding Leads receive clear, prioritised information rather than an overwhelming volume of raw data.
This is a transformational moment for school safeguarding,” said Chris Edwards, Partnership Development Manager at L.E.A.D. IT Services. “Schools have been asking for a solution to the iPad monitoring problem for years. StudentKeeper has delivered it – and we’re proud to be the partner that brings it to UK schools. If your school uses iPads and you’re not yet monitoring them effectively, now is the time to act.
The Safeguarding Gap Is Closing. Is Your School Ready?
With iPad adoption continuing to rise and regulatory expectations tightening under KCSIE, the question for school leaders and safeguarding leads is no longer whether iPad monitoring matters – it’s whether your current provision is adequate.
